Bone remodelling

Throughout your lifetime, a process call bone remodeling takes place: Old bone is removed (resorption) and new bone is added to the skeleton (formation).
  • During childhood and teenage years, new bone is formed faster than old bone is removed. As a result, bones grow in size and density. This continues until peak bone mass is reached around the age of 30.
  • Around age 30, bone resorption starts to exceed bone formation. Bone loss is most rapid in the years after menopause. Osteoporosis develops when bone loss occurs more rapidly.
